Macau identification document holders are now able to verify their identities at local immigration checkpoints with a QR code from Friday onwards.
The new measure allows users of the Macao One Account mobile application – an app created by the government – to register to digitalise their IDs on the platform.
According to official data, as of 10:00 AM on Friday morning, over 40,000 locals had already linked their identities to their mobile phones for the service.
Chao Wai Ieng, the director of the Identification Services Bureau, said that he believed that there would be a “geometric increase” in the number of electronic ID users in the near future.
Under the new policy, over 500 QR code readers have been installed at nine immigration halls in the city, with six of them having their 184 electronic channels fitted with such devices.
However, the new digital identifier is not applicable to lanes that follow ‘joint immigration’ procedures with mainland authorities, such as at the Hengqin checkpoint.
At a recent launch event, Chao said that most public services also adopt the new measure.
Its application is expected to extend to other services such as medical vouchers and government-funded continuing learning programmes in July and August respectively.
