Over the past two and a half decades, Fidelidade Macau has thrived in an evolving insurance landscape. The insurer aims to become even stronger, enhance the quality of its services, develop solutions for industry challenges, and continue making positive contributions to Macau society.

Authorised to provide life and non-life insurance services just months before the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region, Fidelidade Macau has consistently added value, expanded its portfolio, and strengthened its ties with local and international communities over the past quarter-century, building on a history that spans 216 years.

“The company’s presence in Macau is a testament to its ability to adapt and thrive in the evolving insurance landscape,” emphasises Fidelidade Macau CEO Paulo Barbosa. Over these 25 years, the insurance company has weathered economic cycles, regulatory changes, and shifting consumer demands—yet it has increased its market position and continued serving its policyholder base,” he notes.

Recognition and loyalty are key words along this journey. “We reach this milestone with a strong brand reputation, a loyal customer base, and robust operational capabilities, demonstrating our commitment to the modern Macau financial market and our strategic focus on developing high-quality products with customer service driven by a sustainable approach,” Mr. Barbosa adds. At the core of Fidelidade Macau’s mission is “a continued commitment towards employees, customers, stakeholders, and friends, always in pursuit of excellence.” This commitment is reflected in the local and international recognition of the company as a leading life and non-life insurer in the SAR.

Fidelidade Macau Executive Director Ivan Cheung stresses that the company “is celebrating not only its anniversary but another year of success.”

In 2023, the group saw robust growth in its Gross Written Premiums (GWPs) in both the life and non-life segments, with 15.8 percent and 27.3 percent expansions compared to 2022. Also last year, US financial rating agency Fitch upgraded Fidelidade Macau’s Insurer Financial Strength (IFS) rating to ‘A’ (Strong) from ‘A-’ (Strong) with a Stable Outlook.

“This is a reminder that our greatest asset is our united and unstoppable team, responsible for our success, built on dedication, teamwork, and unwavering determination, turning challenges into opportunities and dreams into reality,” Mr. Cheung noted. Over the years, the life insurance segment has witnessed a solid and widely recognised performance. In 2020, after 21 years of providing life insurance and pension fund services in Macau as a branch of Fidelidade – Companhia de Seguros S.A., a local Life Insurance Company was incorporated, ensuring a stronger corporate presence in the region.

A leading provider of innovative solutions

The company’s life insurance product portfolio includes a wide range of personal insurances, such as life protection, mortgage, education, savings, and retirement plans. Fidelidade is also authorised to manage both private pension funds and the non-mandatory central provident fund.

In the general insurance segment, a new subsidiary was formally incorporated in the SAR, Fidelidade Macau – Insurance Company Limited, in 2015. The company’s personal insurance portfolio comprises personal accident, household, fire, motor, hospital, travel, and other products. In commercial insurance, Fidelidade is a leading provider of innovative and comprehensive solutions, serving the needs of corporate customers in various sectors, meeting the increasing demands of organisations established in Macau.

Life insurance Business

Non-life insurance business

For Fidelidade Macau, successful business performance is coupled with a strong commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. The group’s Environment, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) pillars address challenges related to longevity, ageing, climate change, and financial illiteracy, which impact all Macau communities.

On the corporate social responsibility front, the company has been deeply involved and supportive of key initiatives such as the “Charity Run” held by Caritas Macau, the Continuing Professional Development Programme for Insurance Intermediaries, and the “929 Challenge” Startup Competition.

Looking ahead, the company is confident in its future development and success. “We remain committed and prepared for the next decades, to make this company even stronger, improve the quality of insurance services, create solutions to the challenges of the insurance industry, and make positive contributions towards Macau society,” Ivan Cheung emphasises.

Integrated resort operator Wynn has recently collaborated with renowned Chinese master chef Xue Quansheng to reimagine a royal banquet and host a masterclass. The events aimed to celebrate the intangible cultural heritage of Chinese gastronomy while solidifying Macau’s position as a top international travel destination.

In partnership with the Yangzhou Cuisine and Catering Industry Association, Wynn invited Chef Xue to Macau as a guest chef for the Emperor Qianlong’s “Culinary Journey to the South” Royal Banquet held at the Wynn Macau Grand Ballroom on June 15–16.

A culinary team led by Chef Xue, who is ranked among China’s top 10 celebrity chefs and is an expert in Huaiyang cuisine, prepared a sumptuous menu consisting of 36 dishes for the banquet. Huaiyang cuisine, renowned as one of the four great traditions in Chinese cuisine, originated from the culinary styles of the Huai and Yangtze rivers region.

“The Royal Banquet has given our guests an opportunity to experience how China’s extraordinary history and intangible cultural heritage are closely intertwined, while also strengthening Macau’s role as ‘a base for cultural exchange and cooperation where Chinese culture is the mainstream and diverse cultures coexist’,” Linda Chen, the president, President, Vice Chairman and Executive Directo of Wynn Macau, stated.

The menu for the royal banquet drew inspiration from historical records documenting Emperor Qianlong’s six inspection tours during the Qing Dynasty in the southern regions of the Yangtze River. Chef Xue and his team added modern and innovative twists to the dishes.

Notable items from the menu included the exquisitely prepared Velvet Flower Tofu Soup, which showcased the chefs’ intricate knife skills, the Royal Artisan Fruit Platter, and the Stewed Ducks and Pigeon Soup featuring seven distinct flavours.

To enhance the banquet experience, Wynn arranged performances that incorporated culinary storytelling. The chefs also showcased their culinary artistry by demonstrating their Huaiyang knife skills and preparing authentic Yangzhou-style fried rice.

“This event has also given us the unique opportunity to promote the profound traditional culture of China on an international level,” Wynn’s Chen remarked. “[It also helps] encourage greater cross-integration of culture and tourism, add to the allure of Macau as a rich cultural destination, and contribute to the growth of economic diversification for the city.”

In addition to the banquet, Chef Xue hosted a culinary masterclass attended by about 30 students from the Macao University of Tourism (UTM) and members of the Wynn Food & Beverage Academy. The academy was established by Wynn Macau to provide its employees with professional and vocational training in relevant areas.

“The Masterclass served as an excellent platform for the exchange of knowledge in gastronomy and was designed to lead the way for a more diversified and professional developmental approach for the future growth of Macau’s food and beverage industry,” Wynn said in a statement.

Culinary fest

Both the banquet and the masterclass, supported by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and UTM, took place, as MGTO hosted the first-ever “International Cities of Gastronomy Fest, Macao” between June 14 and 23 in the city.

The 10-day festival featured representatives from 29 UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy from 18 countries and regions, in addition to Macau, which is also a Creative City of Gastronomy. The Fest attracted about 107,000 participants and boasted about 100 culinary booths, 60 sessions of culinary showcases, and a gastronomy forum.

As one of the co-organisers of the festival, Wynn set up a culinary exhibition booth at the Fest to showcase Macanese cuisine and collaborated with renowned Macanese chef Raymond Vong to host cooking demonstrations.

“Through events such as these, Wynn aims to leverage Macau’s unique role as an East-West cultural destination and international platform,” the integrated resort operator said in the statement, referring to the city’s recent designation as the “Culture City of East Asia”.

Earlier this month, the Macau government announced that the city had been selected as the “Culture City of East Asia 2025.” This annual initiative, jointly launched by China, Japan, and South Korea, highlights the historical and cultural heritage of these three countries. Each year, one or two cities from each country are nominated and selected as the Culture Cities of East Asia.

“[These events can help] promote the exchange of knowledge and forge new collaborations in culture and tourism, showcase Macau as a ‘Creative City of Gastronomy’ and ‘Culture City of East Asia’ on a global level, and elevate the city’s reputation as an attractive international destination,” Wynn added.

The Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone in downtown Macau has been transformed into a platform to showcase the creativity of local fashion labels, as integrated resort operator Wynn aims to provide a unique fashion and cultural tourism experience for both residents and tourists.

The “Rua da Felicidade Fashion Week” is an initiative organised by Wynn in collaboration with the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Centre (CPTTM), and the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST).

To kick off the event, a fashion show was held on Friday, May 3, at the pedestrian area of this historic street, featuring 70 outfits from the 2024 spring/summer collections of 10 Macau fashion brands. These brands were selected through an earlier open call.

In addition to the fashion show, selected works and information from these 10 Macau fashion brands are exhibited at the Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone from now until June 2.

“These product displays are designed to give visitors a window into the stylish world of Macau fashion, boost the visibility of local fashion brands, and generate more business leads,” Wynn said in a press statement.

The fashion week aims to “showcase the latest creations from Macau’s fashion brands, revitalise businesses in the community through arts and culture, and offer a unique fashion and cultural tourism experience for Macau locals and visitors,” the operator added.

The Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone is a community project launched by Wynn in collaboration with the Macau government in September last year. It supports the government’s “1+4” moderate diversification development strategy. Located next to the city’s main thoroughfare, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, the pedestrian zone offers a variety of new attractions and amenities designed to attract visitors and boost business turnover in the district.

Linking Macau brands to the world

The fashion show on Friday was attended and officiated by government officials, community representatives, and Wynn executives. Among the distinguished guests were Leong Wai Man, Director of the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau; Lao Ngai Leong, Macau Deputy to the National People’s Congress and President of the Advisory Committee for CPTTM; Chan Ka Leong, member of the Macau Executive Council and Director General of the General Union of Neighborhood Associations of Macau; Linda Chen, President, Vice Chairman, and Executive Director of Wynn Macau; and others.

In addition to the selected local fashion brands, some undergraduate students from MUST also showcased their designs at the Friday fashion show.

Isabella Choi, the designer behind Nega C. Fashion, one of the 10 selected fashion brands, expressed her excitement at seeing her designs displayed on Rua da Felicidade. Nega C. Fashion, established in 2011, is a leisurewear brand designed for women.

“We have participated in some street shows before, but it is the first time for us to join a show of this grand scale with other fashion brands,” Choi said. “It’s a remarkable experience.”

“Many people attended and watched the fashion show today, so it’s a really good promotional opportunity for small brands like ours,” she added. “As our designs reflect the fashion styles of women in Macau, it’s a perfect fit for our brand to be featured in the Rua da Felicidade Fashion Week.”

Kitty Ng, the designer of local haute couture brand La Mode Désir, shares a similar perspective. The brand’s spring/summer 2024 collection focuses on qipao, also known as cheongsam, a traditional Chinese dress for women that has evolved over the centuries.

“Rua da Felicidade is an antique street in the city, and qipao perfectly matches the ambiance of this street. That’s why we came up with these designs for the fashion show,” Ng explained. “It’s truly a precious opportunity for us to be part of this.”

“[This event] can help promote the designs of Macau fashion brands because many tourists visit this district,” Ng continued. “Through this activity, I’m confident that not only locals but also travellers will become more aware of us and the Macau fashion scene.”

More activities for Labour Day holiday

Furthermore, during the Labour Day Golden Week holiday from April 29 to May 5, Wynn is also organising a series of exciting activities at the Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone. These include an outdoor market showcasing cultural and creative products, cultural performances, and cultural tours. Complimentary shuttle bus services are also provided by the operator during this period, connecting Wynn Macau and Rua Das Estalagens.

“The goal is to give locals and tourists an opportunity to truly experience the vibrancy of Rua da Felicidade, while also promoting economic diversification for the community,” Wynn stated.

“Through arts and culture, Wynn hopes to entice more visitors to Macau and the [Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau] Greater Bay Area with the addition of rich new tourism experiences and vibrant festivities,” the operator added. “Wynn will continue to enrich Macau’s cultural tourism offerings and expand the cross-sector integration of ‘tourism+’ to boost the city’s economy and the sustainable development of the tourism industry in the long run.”

The winners of the inaugural edition of the Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards, the world’s biggest Chinese wine competition of international standard organised by Wynn, were unveiled in Macau on Saturday (April 13). The Fei Tswei Marselan Reserve 2021 from the Chinese northern central region of Ningxia was crowned as the “Best Wine of China.”

This awards initiative underscores Wynn’s commitment to championing Chinese quality wines and wineries while consolidating the city’s reputation as a gastronomic destination and supporting its “tourism +” development, the integrated operator said.

The awards ceremony took place at the Wynn Palace on Saturday night, with 500 international and regional industry experts and media representatives in attendance. A total of 23 awards were presented among over 700 submissions from about 200 premium wineries in China.

“The newly launched Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards aims to promote outstanding Chinese wines and showcase Macau and Wynn’s world-class hospitality,” Linda Chen, President, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, said in her remarks during the ceremony.

President, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, Limited

“We have created the much-anticipated awards ceremony to serve as a global platform to allow wine experts from various regions in China to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and promote Chinese wines on a larger international stage,” she continued. “Through leveraging Macau’s strong position as the Creative City of Gastronomy and capitalising on the city’s role as the World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, we gather the top Chinese wineries and quality wine industry stakeholders to showcase the edge of the Chinese brand.”

In view of Macau’s ongoing efforts to explore more tourism and leisure offerings and attract more international visitors, the local authorities are delighted to see initiatives like the Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards.

“MGTO [Macao Government Tourism Office] is pleased to see that Macau’s integrated tourism and leisure enterprises are proactively organising a wide range of events and activities together with their industry peers,” Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of MGTO, said in the ceremony.

Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office

“This strengthens Macau’s position as the City of Gastronomy and enriches its offerings as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, thereby promoting the sustainable development of Macau’s tourism industry and related industries,” the official added.

Gathering industry experts

In the evaluation of over 700 submissions from about 200 Chinese wineries, a panel of 27 internationally acclaimed wine judges was formed, including seven Masters of Wine, three Master Sommeliers, winemakers, educators, journalists, hoteliers, and wine buyers. The Masters of Wine, such as Fongyee Walker, Gus Zhu, Andrew Caillard, and award-winning winemaker Eddie McDougall, were among the panel.

Prior to the ceremony held on Saturday, the 27 judges were invited to Macau in early March to taste, assess, and rank the submissions for 23 trophies in three major categories: “Wynn Signature Trophies,” “Varietals Champion Trophies,” and “Regional Champion Trophies.” These divisions aim to honour China’s most talented winemakers while recognising the breadth of major varietal expressions and regional diversity in China, according to the organiser.

“It’s unprecedented to have such a large-scale and high-standard contest of Chinese wines on a global stage,” said Wynn Macau’s Chen in an interview with the media on the sidelines of the ceremony.

“Leveraging Macau as a platform, we hope more consumers and wine enthusiasts, whether they are Mainland Chinese or international tourists, can recognise and understand the robust development of the Chinese wine industry and the quality of Chinese wine,” she added.

The awards initiative is just one part of Wynn’s efforts to advocate Chinese wines on a global stage. “This competition gives a huge boost to the promotion of Chinese wine on an international scale. Following the competition, we will also promote the award-winning wines in our international hotels and host more wine-related activities,” Chen explained.

More post-awards activities

Alongside the ceremony, Wynn organised a wide array of Chinese wine pairing tasting events and masterclasses over the weekend. These included a Chinese Wine Forum, where experts discussed the development of the Chinese wine industry.

Furthermore, Wynn will host the Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Month promotion in May. During this month, guests can indulge in specially curated wine pairing tasting menus at Wynn’s dining venues, such as Chef Tam’s Seasons, Lakeview Palace, SW Steakhouse, and Mizumi at Wynn Palace, as well as Golden Flower, Wing Lei, Lakeside Trattoria, and Mizumi at Wynn Macau.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to taste the award-winning wines at various bars of Wynn including Palace Reserve Club, Cinnebar, Bar Cristal, and Wing Lei Bar.

The award-winning wines will also receive the “Wynn Signature Award” label and be invited to participate in national masterclasses, hospitality and consumer events, media tastings, and major banquets, Wynn added.

These initiatives and events highlight Macau’s strengths as the Creative City of Gastronomy, a world centre of tourism and leisure, and a Chinese-meets-West hub, remarked Chen. “These initiatives bring together the cultures of gastronomy and wine, the Chinese and Western cultures, and the resources between Mainland China and Macau,” she added.

Following the success of the inaugural edition, Wynn also announced that registration for the Wynn Signature Chinese Wine Awards 2025 will commence on May 1, 2024.

Three-time world champion Mark Williams was crowned the champion of the “Wynn Presents: 2023 Macau Snooker Masters” tournament, claiming the coveted top prize of £80,000 (MOP819,000). Williams secured a hard-fought victory over Jack Lisowski, the World No. 16 player, with a final scoreline of 9-6 on Friday.

The invitational Macau Masters tournament, which was hosted by the local integrated resort operator Wynn Resorts (Macau) S.A. and supported by the Macau Sports Bureau, unfolded at the Grand Theater of Wynn Palace from December 25 to 29.

The sell-out event brought together eight of the world’s elite snooker players for a thrilling series of clashes this week in Macau, captivating both residents and tourists. The star-studded line-up included: Ronnie O’Sullivan, the legendary seven-time World Snooker Championship winner; Judd Trump, the current World No. 2 player from England; Ding Jun Hui from China, the first Asian player to reach the World No. 1 snooker ranking; Marco Fu from Hong Kong, China; and others.

Reflecting on his triumph, Williams expressed his delight, stating, “This [tournament] has been fantastic, and I think every player wants to come back.”

He also commended the organisers of the Macau Snooker Masters, adding, “Hopefully this could be a regular event in the snooker calendar.”

Lisowski, the finalist, shared a similar sentiment, praising the hospitality of the people of Macau and the incredible hotel. “It’s probably one of the best weeks in my life,” the English player remarked.

Mark Williams

Wynn also highlighted the significance of introducing this snooker tournament to the city. “In hosting high-quality events such as this Masters Invitational Tournament, the aim is to boost Macau’s image as a leading sports destination that hosts top-tier international sports events while also creating a platform for greater exchanges on a global level,” the company stated in a press statement prior to the tournament.

Ultimate showdown

En route to the highly anticipated final, Williams from Wales delivered a commanding 6-3 victory against Si Jiahui, the up-and-coming Chinese snooker star, in the quarterfinals. He then proceeded to defeat Judd Trump 6-2, solidifying his path to the final showdown. Meanwhile, Lisowski secured his spot in the final showdown by eliminating fellow compatriot Kyren Wilson 6-2 and dominating Fu from Hong Kong with the same scoreline earlier this week.

Williams took an early advantage in the opening session of the final on Friday afternoon, rushing off with a 2-0 lead. However, Lisowski showcased his skill and competitive spirit by equalising the game, impressively pocketing the fourth frame with a masterful 147 maximum break, which garnered cheers and applause from the crowd at the packed Grand Theatre in Wynn Palace.

Jack Lisowski

Lisowski was the first player to pull off this feat in the Macau tournament. But the blistering opening session concluded with Williams leading 5-3.

The second session of the final resumed on Friday night, providing a fresh start for both players. Lisowski made a strong comeback, securing the first two frames of the second half and levelling the game at 5-5. However, Williams skillfully fended off his opponent’s resurgence, surging ahead again by winning the next three frames.

On the brink of defeat, Lisowski mounted a remarkable comeback, narrowing the gap against Williams and trailing by just two frames. However, after a series of strategic exchanges in the 15th frame, Williams broke the stalemate and secured a 9-6 victory over Lisowski.

During the prize ceremony held shortly after the final, Sports Bureau President Pun Weng Kun, Linda Chen, President and Vice Chairman of Wynn Macau, and other distinguished guests presented the prize cheques of £80,000 and £30,000 to Williams and Lisowski, respectively.

“Overall, I played pretty well in this tournament, and I’m happy with the win,” expressed Williams.

Reflecting on his loss in the final, Lisowski remarked, “It’s a bit of a shame that I missed a few balls today… but I played great all week, and I had so much fun.”

“Mark played great today, and obviously, Mark is one of the greatest players ever,” Lisowski continued, acknowledging Williams’ skill. He also mentioned his intention to learn from Williams, particularly in taking time during crucial moments of the game.

The 2023 Macau Snooker Masters was also jointly organized by StarMac Entertainment & Production Limited, Macao Billiards General Association, and Sailing Up Sports. The event kicked off with an exhibition game between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ding Jun Hui on the first day (December 25), followed by official games over the next four days.

Besides the thrilling clashes on the snooker table, some of the players, including Marco Fu and Si Jiahui, also took the opportunity to visit the local community earlier this week, enjoying a stroll at the “Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone” in downtown Macau. This pedestrian zone is a community revitalization project launched by Wynn in collaboration with the Macau government in September. It incorporates a wide range of attractions and amenities designed to entice visitors and boost the local community economy.

More top-notch sports events

According to Wynn, the Macau Snooker Masters helps “advance the collaborative development of the city’s tourism and leisure sports industries and solidify Macau’s role as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure to boost its international image.”

“Wynn will continue to take the lead in introducing top-tier events and festivals to Macau, including a variety of world-class tsporting events, MICE conferences and conventions, as well as art festivals, with the goals of broadening Macau’s international appeal and [bolstering] Macau’s role in the international sports community,” the operator said in the statement.

In tandem with the Macau government’s “1+4” diversification development strategy, which positions the city as a global tourism destination while nurturing emerging sectors like modern finance and sports, Wynn has joined forces with The International Series to host a prestigious golf tournament in March 2024. The event, named The International Series Macau presented by Wynn, will be one of the ten International Series events in the 2024 season on the Asian Tour, the leading men’s professional golf tour in Asia.

Across the bridge from Macao, Taipa has transformed itself into a Fantasy Fairyland. All of your already-favourite locations (and maybe a few hidden jewels) are now locations taken right out of a fairytale book.

We suggest starting right at the unique Vila da Taipa Historical Center Archway, where children will find their magical side and adults will be able to get in touch with childhood memories. A life-size Glittering Music Box, finished with bright lightbulbs and painted pink, is there to ensure dreams can come true. Visitors can enter the installation, take pictures, and create beautiful memories. Right next to it, a beautiful, colourful Musical Ferris-Wheel captivates the imagination. Only the sky is the limit!

There’s much to see everywhere you turn in the Old Taipa Village, from Largo Camões Fair with the Grooving Tram Station to the Carmo Fair with the Shining Tunnel. But whatever you do, don’t miss the Projection Mapping! Three shows will take place in Largo dos Bombeiros.

Enjoy Magic is featured between December 2 and 31, followed by Season Diffusion, from January 1 to 31, and A Dose of Lighting Dopamine, starting on February 1 until 25. You can enjoy the shows every 30 minutes from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Each mapping show will span about eight minutes, and the projection teams hail from Macao as well as the two UNESCO Creative Cities of Design – Seoul, Korea, and Wuhan, China.

Coloane Ambassadors

Calming and picturesque, Coloane has always been the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful stroll with your loved ones. During the Light Up Macao however, it’s already beautiful colours turn even brighter at night with unique light installations, and a special visitor, the adorable T-Boy mascot.

A T-Boy Hipster will be waiting for you at the Coloane Library with a lot of its friends following you along the way. At Coloane Pier, visitors will be welcomed by T-Boy Seafarer and its Companions too! But, as usual, the best is saved for last and there are some jaw-dropping Projection Mapping here too.

With two shows, the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier in Coloane will be transformed into pure magic. A Beacon of Light in a Macao’s Winter Night is on display until December 30 (with the exception of December 24 & 31), taking place every 30 minutes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and then again during the whole month of January at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Adorning the Wynn Macau Lakeside Promenade, a mesmerising sculpture, drawing inspiration from Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, was revealed earlier this month. Etherea, the brainchild of renowned Italian artist Edoardo Tresoldi, beckons visitors to immerse themselves in a profound and poetic discourse on art, humanity, and the urban milieu.

This unveiling stands as one of the most recent initiatives by Wynn Macau, the integrated resort developer, aimed at enhancing and championing the city’s cultural and artistic tourism. “By bringing internationally renowned works of art to Macau, Wynn supports the development of high-quality tourism that will drive the expansion of the overseas tourism market into Macau,” the operator remarked in a press statement.

Edoardo Tresoldi, an artist and sculptor of international acclaim, is celebrated for his monumental works crafted from wire mesh and industrial materials. His creations transcend spatial and temporal constraints, blurring the lines between art and reality, resulting in a visual synthesis that defies physical limitations.

“This time in Macau, I’ve played more with the composition of lighting,” he shares. “During the nighttime, a lot of elements of the city come alive and create a lot of shapes, so I’ve started to compose the lighting in relation to the environment.”

“I mostly work with natural environments, so the urban landscape this time is very

interesting,” the artist adds. “It’s so much fun to play withlights.”

This time, Tresoldi brings Etherea to the city, an artwork initially conceived for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the United States back in 2018. Standing at an impressive 10 meters and showcasing the interplay of transparent wire mesh, the installation has previously graced the cityscape of Rome, Italy.

Tresoldi remarks that he reimagines his installations to fit into different settings each time they are staged in various locations. Regarding his approach to remodelling the work for the Macau showcase, the artist highlights that the urban landscape and light scape of Wynn Macau Lakeside Promenade on the Macau Peninsula have captured his attention.

Acknowledging his affinity for working with natural surroundings, Tresoldi finds the urban landscape of Macau particularly intriguing this time. “It’s a delightful experience to play with lights,” he adds.

Interaction with the environment

Recipient of the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture and recognised as one of Forbes’ 30 most influential European artists under 30 in 2017, Tresoldi is also no stranger to Macau’s art scene. His other installation, Sacral, was featured at the “Wynn – Garden of Earthly Delights” art exhibition held at Wynn Palace in 2019.

Reflecting on the differences between the two showcases in Macau, Tresoldi notes that the previous display was indoors, while the current one takes place outdoors. “I usually work on outdoor projects because the language of my art is to interact with the landscape,” he indicates. “I’m looking for the movement of lights, the changes of the weather, and the dynamics in public spaces.”

Expressing his love for Macau’s diverse architecture, Tresoldi shares his fondness for the city’s historical district. “I really like the historical part of the city,” he says. “I’m very happy to have this installation play with the interaction between classic architecture and the urban landscape of Macau.”

The Global Legal & Sustainable Timber Forum 2023 enriched Macau’s role as a MICE hub for green innovation and sustainability and as a platform bringing together producers, exporters, and buyers.

The state of Mato Grosso in Brazil is the top supplier of native wood in Brazil, which is the world’s largest exporter of tropical timber. For the Centre of Production Industries and Wood Exporters from the State of Mato Grosso (CIPEM), an entity that brings together the region’s timber industry, boosting trading ties with China, already a key market for them, is a must. And Macau emerged as an ideal platform as the SAR hosted the first Global Legal and Sustainable Timber Forum 2023 (GLSTF 2023) on November 21 and 22.

The event, which was co-hosted by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) and coordinated by the Secretariat of the Global Green Supply Chains Initiative (GGSC), attracted 700 guests from 36 countries and regions. Under the theme “Connect, Cooperate, and Share to Promote the Recovery of the Global Tropical Timber Market,” GLSTF 2023 is closely aligned with the global trend of green, low-carbon, and sustainable development, in line with China’s national development policy of ecological civilization construction.

Brazil’s leading value

“This Forum in Macau is an excellent initiative,” stressed Ednei Blasius, president of CIPEM, adding that “it serves as an important platform to promote dialogue and business between producing and consuming countries,” posing “great opportunities for us in Mato Gross, Brazil, to showcase our unique value of our fully sustainable, renewable, and traceable wood.”

“This Forum serves as an important platform to promote dialogue and business between producing and consuming countries” – Ednei Blasius, president of CIPEM (Mato Grosso, Brazil)

China, the largest timber consumer, is already a key trading partner for the Mato Grosso timber and wood sector, but it can become their number one market in the foreseeable future.

Frank Almeida, forest business specialist and president of Brazil’s National Forum of Forest-Based Activities, also explained that GLSTF, which also included an exhibition area, served as a useful and important mechanism. “We already have business ties here, but we want to expand and understand the market’s needs so we can fine-tune our products and better serve our clients,” he said.

Mr. Almeida added, “China is not yet our top export market, but we are confident it will become our number one partner in the coming years.”

From Foshan to the World

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) is indeed a thriving market for the timber industry. Several representatives and companies hailing from Guangdong province seized this opportunity to connect with major wood suppliers. Within the GBA, the city of Foshan is known as the “furniture capital of the world,” with numerous large-scale furniture shopping malls and woodworking machinery factories. One of the Foshan-based companies joining GLSTF was JXCAT.com, an online platform that connects producers, exporters, and buyers of timber, wood, furniture equipment, and woodwork machinery. Randy Wong, founder and general manager of JXCAT.com, was upbeat about being in Macau at GLSTF. “I think Macau is the best choice for a forum of this kind, as it is a bridge to easily connect mainland China and international markets.”

“I think Macau is the best choice for a forum of this kind, as it is a bridge to easily connect mainland China and international markets” – Randy Wong, general manager of Foshan-based JXCAT.com platform

The event was thus another example of the Macau SAR’s role as a platform between China, the Portuguese-speaking Countries, and other partners, bringing together China, the world’s largest timber consumer and the top exporter of tropical timber, Brazil, alongside representatives and businesspeople from other major producing and exporting markets such as Cameroon, Gabon, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Republic of Congo, and Thailand, among others.

Macau, the perfect partner

For ITTO, co-organiser of GLSTF 2023, Macau emerged as the “perfect partner” for this event. “As Macau has a policy of growing external cooperation, we saw that we were perfect partners,” said Sheam Satkuru, Executive Directorof ITTO, an international organisation comprising a total of 75 producing and consuming member countries.

She added that “not only do we have important wood importers here in Macau, but the city is next to Guangdong province which has some of the world’s largest ports for wood resource imports.”

“As Macau has a policy of growing external cooperation, we saw that we were perfect partners” – Sheam Satkuru, Executive Director of ITTO

Executive Director of IPIM Sam Lei underlined that GLSTF 2023 has contributed to the development of Macau’s MICE industry, boosted the integration of sustainable development and the MICE industry, and played an active role in guiding Macau’s green, diversified, and international development.

Luo Xinjian, Secretary-General of GGSC, also pointed out that Macau boasts advanced MICE facilities and an attractive cultural environment, making it an ideal place for large-scale international events.

In addition to a wide range of panels and business matching sessions that paved the way for business opportunities, major international collaborative research projects were released for the first time during the GLSTF 2023. These included About the Construction of the Global Timber Industry Index Platform” and “Research on the Collaborative Operations of the Blockchain-Based Timber Traceability System, collaborative projects between ITTO and universities and research institutes in Macau, which will help cultivate professionals in related fields in the SAR.

A dazzling display of light installations featuring butterflies and flowers has taken centre stage in the city, as integrated resort operator Wynn is providing an immersive outdoor experience for both residents and visitors during the winter holiday season.

This latest endeavour by Wynn, titled “Dancing Butterflies and Blooming onders” is part of “Light Up Macao 2023”, a three-month-long event organised by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) in collaboration with the city’s six integrated resort operators.

Wynn has transformed the Wynn Macau Lakeside Promenade and the Nam Van Lake area, which includes Anim’Arte NAM VAN, Nam Van Lake Nautical Centre, and the White Canopy at Nam Van, into a mesmerising spectacle of fluttering butterflies and blossoming flowers. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of artistic and interactive installations, laser mapping shows, and other captivating elements from now until February 25, 2024.

“The innovative design blends in beautifully with the surrounding scenery and architecture of the neighbourhood to create a vibrant, festive atmosphere for everyone to revel in during the holiday season,” Wynn said in a press statement.

To enrich the experience of the “Dancing Butterflies and Blooming Wonders” initiative, Wynn has incorporated augmented reality (AR) check-in features across the areas, allowing visitors to engage in interactive games and have a chance to win prizes.

“This exciting event will help further elevate the city’s reputation to become a world-class tourism destination, and [it] is expected to attract more international tourists to Macau,” Wynn added.

Under the theme of “Dazzling Wonderland”, “Light Up Macao 2023” blends art, technology, unique architecture, history, culture, and creativity to illuminate various districts throughout the city, each with its own subtheme. With 34 locations across seven districts, the event boasts a wide range of light installations, mapping shows, and other experiences.

Spanning over the next three months, the event also coincides with several major festivities, including the 24th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau SAR, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and the Chinese Lantern Festival.

According to the MGTO, “Light Up Macao 2023” aims to invigorate the nighttime community economy and provide economic benefits to local businesses by attracting a large influx of visitors to different districts.

The latest official data reveals a surge in visitor numbers to the city, with a year-on-year increase of 358.8 percent to 22.69 million visitors in the first 10 months of 2023. International visitation accounted for about 4.5 percent of the overall visitation tally.

In a bid to stimulate the community economy and enhance the city’s appeal to international tourists, Wynn also launched the “Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone Project” in downtown Macau Peninsula in late September. This community-driven initiative aims to rejuvenate the historic district of Rua da Felicidade through the incorporation of art installations, a cultural and creative market, art and cultural programmes, a night market experience, and other activities.

Just as December arrives MGM Macau Tennis Masters promises a fusion of Star Power and Sports

Macau is the stage for an unprecedented tennis spectacle as the MGM Macau Tennis Masters gears up to host a star-studded event from December 2nd to 3rd. This unique blend of sporting expertise and entertainment promises to captivate fans worldwide and solidify Macau’s status as a destination for sports and leisure.

Organized by MGM and IMG, renowned for their expertise in sports management and promotion, the event is set to unfold at the Macau East Asia Games Dome, the city’s largest indoor sports facility. Boasting an ensemble of six eminent international tennis stars, including four ATP and two WTA luminaries, this first tournament in Macau is primed to leave an unforgettable mark in the world of sports entertainment.

A Promising Event

The lineup for the MGM Macau Tennis Masters is nothing less a “who’s who” in the world of tennis, featuring an impressive number of athletes. The ATP segment showcases former world No. 5 Taylor Fritz, the resurgent Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor ranked at No. 21, Croatian powerhouse Borna Coric, and the emerging Chinese talent Zhang Zhizhen. Complementing this near-to perfection cast, the WTA contingent features the formidable Daria Kasatkina from Russia and the rising Chinese star Wang Xinyu.

Tournament Director Luiz Carvalho expressed enthusiasm about this group of established players and rising talents, anticipating close matches that will not only showcase their skills but also foster a friendly rivalry. Although all matches promise to keep viewers at the edge of their seats, one of the highlights will take place at 2:00 PM on the opening day. The Mixed Double Match will pace Zhang Zhizhen and Wang Xinyu against European talents Borna Coric and Daria Kasatkina, igniting the spirit of competition while promising a captivating tennis action.

Kenneth Feng, President and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, extended a warm welcome to the international tennis stars, emphasizing the anticipation surrounding their first visit to the city. He reiterated the diversity in playing styles and personalities among these players, forecasting a spectacular event that will highlight Macau’s reputation as a hub for sports and entertainment.

Tennis Stars are Coming to Town

The event’s anticipation heightened due to the fact that injuries led to a revised lineup, which led to a number of newer— even more anticipated names— joining the tournament. Taylor Fritz, who solidified his position in the world’s top 10, leads the pack. His remarkable journey, becoming the first American man in over a decade to break into the top 5, promises a one-of-a-kind performance in town.

Adding to the fervor is Tallon Griekspoor, the Dutch sensation, whose breakout season and recent victories have propelled him into the highest tiers of the sport. Borna Coric, armed with an impressive career-high ranking of No. 12 and three career titles, brings a compelling intensity to the tournament, while Zhang Zhizhen, known as China’s trailblazer, arrives at a career high of No. 52 after a historic run in Masters 1000 events earlier this year.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) lineup is equally impressive, headlined by Daria Kasatkina, a player steadily climbing the rankings and boasting six singles titles, known for her creative playing style. Wang Xinyu, the rising Chinese tennis star, continues to dazzle, achieving milestones and securing her place among the sport’s emerging talents.

An Affair to Remember

The MGM Macau Tennis Masters promises a tennis extravaganza on an indoor hard court, with matches contested as best of three sets and a ten-point match tiebreak, ensuring gripping action for spectators. The tournament agenda includes men’s singles matches, a special mixed doubles faceoff between China and Europe, and a compelling women’s singles fixture followed by the awards ceremony on Day 2.

Supported by various governmental bodies and partners such as FILA, Bonaqua, and Lalique, this two-day tournament invites fans to witness the clash of titans and experience the thrill of world-class tennis.

Tickets for the event are available here, offering diverse seating options for tennis enthusiasts eager to be part of this groundbreaking sporting spectacle. From outer ring seats starting at MOP$280 to VIP seats at MOP$880 for daily tickets and two-day passes ranging from MOP$480 to MOP$1400. For enthusiasts or just the curious in you, the MGM Macau Tennis Masters promises to be an event to remember.

Integrated resort operator Wynn Macau has announced a partnership with The International Series to bring a prestigious golf tournament to Macau in March 2024, underscoring the city’s appeal as a sports and international tourism destination.

The multiyear partnership between the two entities was revealed in a press conference held at Wynn’s Cotai resort, Wynn Palace, on Monday. Known as The International Series Macau presented by Wynn, the tournament will be one of the 10 International Series events in the 2024 season on the Asian Tour, the leading men’s professional golf tour in Asia.

“We are proud to sponsor the very first International Series Macau, part of a new elite tier of sporting events and entertaining offerings in Asia,” Linda Chan, President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Wynn Macau Limited, said in the press conference.

“This world-class golf tournament underscores our commitment to supporting the Macau SAR Government’s ‘1+4’ diversification development strategy, growing the sports industry, and strengthening the city’s position as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure,” she added.

Linda Chen, President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Wynn Macau Limited

The “1+4” diversification development strategy, which has been advanced by the Macau government in recent years, aims to position the city as a prominent global tourism destination while nurturing four emerging sectors: health and wellness, modern finance, technology, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), culture, and sports.

In addition to showcasing top-tier golf talent at the Macau Golf and Country Club in March 2024, the week-long International Series Macau will also feature “world-class entertainment and activities” at Wynn Palace, according to the operator.

“This internationally-acclaimed sporting event will enhance Macau’s global reputation and attract international visitors to the city,” Chen added. Pun Weng Kun, President of the Macau Sports Bureau, also attended the Monday press conference.

Macau received nearly 20 million visitors in the first nine months of 2023, with overseas visitors accounting for about 4.3 percent of total arrivals, the official data said.

Growing golf scene in GBA

The International Series, which is also backed by LIV Golf, has gained momentum since its inception in 2022, and the 2023 schedule includes tournaments held in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore, Thailand, England, and other locations.

“The International Series offers a dynamic platform with a proven track record for attracting big names,” Rahul Singh, Head of The International Series, said in the press conference. “I would like to express my gratitude to Wynn Macau for allowing us to break new ground in Macau, helping the Asian Tour and LIV Golf continue to develop what is now becoming the highest-level golf tournament series in Asia.”

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour

The total prize money for the 2024 season of The International Series would increase by about US$5 million from the current season to over US$23 million, while the prize pool for The International Series Macau 2024 alone would stand close to US$2 million, Singh added.

Also addressing the press conference on Wednesday, Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour, said, “We are truly excited that The International Series will visit Macau for the first time in 2024.”

“The Tour has visited Macau with regularity over the past two decades, and today’s announcement is a tremendous development for golf in Macau’s burgeoning Greater Bay Area,” he added. “As far as the Asian Tour is concerned, we’re growing and we’re in a great position right now: we’ve had two great weeks in the Greater Bay Area, and we look forward to continuing this momentum in this region in March next year.”

Rahul Singh, Head of The International Series

The two legs of The International Series 2023 held in Mainland China and in Hong Kong have just concluded earlier this month, with the latter event taking place over the past weekend.

Gathering world-class players

During the press conference held in Macau on Monday, three renowned golfers also expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming golf event in the city. Patrick Reed, who secured victory in the 2018 Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships in professional golf, described Macau as a “stunning” and “ideal” destination for The International Series.

“From a player perspective, it is a great addition to the calendar where you get to play world-class golf against a quality field while staying at the Wynn Palace, one of the finest luxury resort hotels in Macau,” he said. Visiting Macau for the first time, the American golfer added that he was impressed by the city’s hospitality, which “makes the experience so much better”.

Graeme McDowell, a golfer from Northern Ireland and winner of the U.S. Open, another major golf championship, also experienced Macau for the first time. “The International Series is a perfect fit for Macau as golf in China continues to develop,” he said in the press conference. “I look forward to playing tournament golf in front of the knowledgeable golf fans of the region.”

Andy Ogletree, a two-time winner on The International Series in 2023 so far, emphasised the significance of the Macau event next year as a “must-attend” tournament. “There is obviously real demand and great golf here, and this is a market that is only going to grow,” he remarked. “Bringing some of the world’s best players next season can only help cement Macau’s place on the international golf market.”

Gala of three concurrent expos took centre stage in October, with C-PLPEX, MIF, and MFE giving full play to Macau’s business platform. SMEs from Portuguese-speaking Countries were delighted with the opportunities they found here and are eager to return next year.

It was a long journey all the way from Mozambique to Macau, but it definitely paid off for Simão Mavimbe, as he shared his excitement over the visitors’ keen interest in Mozambican products on display at the China-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Expo (Macao) (1st C-PLPEX) . This event was held at The Venetian Macau Cotai Expo, in tandem with the 28th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (28th MIF) and the Macao Franchise Expo 2023 (2023MFE). These three trade shows, organized by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), took place between October 19 and 22, 2023.

“It’s a very positive experience for us, Mozambican exhibitors, to participate in the trade show,” said Mr. Mavimbe, who joined the delegation from the Mozambican Investment Promotion Agency (AIPEX).

“Macau’s role as a platform for China-Portuguese speaking Countries businesses is very encouraging” – Simão Mavimbe, Mozambican Investment Promotion Agency

Agricultural produce, food and beverage items, and minerals attracted many visitors to AIPEX’s exhibition booth, located in one of the seven C-PLPEX exhibition areas. Simão Mavimbe’s smile was echoed by many of the 300 exhibitors, including 260 from Portuguese-speaking Countries, who joined this Lusophone-themed trade show.

Auspicious channels

Hailing from the Southern Angolan province of Namibe, Dar Vida was in Macau not only to promote its existing fishing distribution business but also to attract investment for their fish processing plant project in the provincial capital of Moçamedes.

“Our aim was to find a channel to Asia, and Macau emerged as a good opportunity” – Niúra António, Dar Vida (Angolan company)

The company’s representative, Niúra António, explained that they have land parcels and a wide network of fishermen.

“Many people have shown interest in purchasing squid, shrimp, octopus, and cuttlefish.”

It was her first time in Macau and China. Having the opportunity to participate in C-PLPEX was a blessing. “Our aim was to find a channel to Asia, and Macau emerged as a good opportunity,” she explained, adding that they found a number of prospective clients at the Macau fair.

Business interest was translated into contracts during the three concurrent trade shows, with 101 contracts signed at the ceremonies, accounting for an 8.6% year-on-year increase, of which 15% involved projects from Portuguese-speaking Countries.

Enhanced ties

Exhibitors from the delegation led by the Business Confederation of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries were involved in signing protocols paving the way for business development. It was the first time the Business Confederation of CPLP was officially represented in an MIF-linked trade show in Macau, and it certainly won’t be the last. The Confederation’s president, Nelma Rodrigues, was upbeat about the outcome of C-PLPEX. “We brought about 20 companies from Portuguese-speaking Countries and signed several protocols,” she underlined.

“We can establish solid partnerships here in Macau, and through this trade show, we can jointly tread this path towards mutually beneficial cooperation” – Nelma Rodrigues, Business Confederation of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries

Nelma Rodrigues visited Macau in May when she was received by Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng and met with IPIM ahead of preparing a delegation to come to C-PLPEX and MIF.

C-PLPEX indeed gave full play to Macau’s role as a commercial and trade service platform for companies, namely SMEs. During the “Cross-border E-commerce Business Matching Session,” a company from a Portuguese-speaking Country revealed its intention to explore future prospects in cross-border e-commerce.

Business matching

The three exhibitions attracted more than 60,000 visitors and hosting about 1,000 business matching sessions, an increase of 30% over the previous year. This year also marked the first time that the three exhibitions spanned four exhibition halls, covering a total area of 37,000 square meters, with 20 exhibition areas, attracting on-site exhibitors from 15 countries and regions.

For Mozambique’s Simão Mavimbe, Macau means business opportunities. “Macau’s role as a platform for China-Portuguese Speaking Countries businesses is very encouraging.”

Niúra António returned to Angola with confidence in coming back next year to ink business deals with the fish processing plant up and running.

Lisbon-based Nelma Rodrigues subscribes to this view of Macau as an auspicious Sino-Lusophone platform. “We can establish solid partnerships here in Macau, and through this trade show, we can jointly tread this path towards mutually beneficial cooperation,” she concludes.

Integrated resort operator Wynn Macau hosted two culinary events over the past five days, celebrating the international flavours of chili and the culture of China’s Qingdao city. The events were aimed at showcasing Macau’s unique blend of Eastern and Western influences and enhancing the SAR’s reputation as a “tourism + gastronomy”destination.

The “Wynn Gastronomy Extravaganza – A World Tour of Chili” and the “3rd Macau-Qingdao Beer & Cultural Festival and Macau-Qingdao Week” took place from November 1 to 5 on the Wynn Palace South Lawn.

Featuring specialty food and beverages, a cultural handicrafts market, live performances, culinary competitions, and masterclasses by globally-renowned chefs, among others, the two events created a festive atmosphere for residents and tourists to indulge in.

More than 20 specialty food and beverage stalls were available at the “Wynn Gastronomy Extravaganza”, offering an array of spicy delights from around the world, namely China, Mexico, Australia, India, Mozambique, Turkey, and Thailand.

During the opening ceremony, Frederic Luvisutto, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, noted that the two events aim to present “an international ‘culinary carnival’ to further build on Macau’s role as a UNESCO-designated ‘Creative City of Gastronomy,’ strengthen the cross-border integration of ‘tourism + gastronomy’, and advance the diversified and sustainable development of Macau’s tourism industry.”

He added that visitors had “the opportunity to engage in global cultural exchanges and discover specialties around the world through the unique dishes” from different places.

Ku Mei Leng, Chief of the Office of the Macau Secretary for Economy and Finance, also said in the same occasion, “The SAR government is pleased to see that Macau’s integrated tourism and leisure enterprises, alongside industry peers, are actively organising diverse mega events and activities together, developing a distinctive tourism brand for the city.”

Local talents showcase

The five-day event showcased not only a wide range of culinary delights but also featured food and beverage competitions and cooking masterclasses.

Renowned chefs, mixologists, brewery owners, and industry professionals were invited to conduct eight food and beverage masterclasses, where they shared the gastronomic cultures and cooking techniques of various destinations with local residents and visitors.

One of the highlights of the event was the UBCM Bartender of the Year 2023—Savour the Seven Continents competition, organised by the Union of Bartenders & Cocktails of Macau (UBCM) and sponsored by Wynn. The competition took place on November 2 and invited participating bartenders to create cocktails inspired by “The Silk Road” theme and sustainable practices. The winner of this competition will represent Macau at the IBA World Cocktail Championship 2024 in Portugal, and the winning cocktail will be featured on select bar menus at Wynn.

The “Chili Cook-off”, a chili-themed cooking competition, also took centre stage during the last three days of the “Wynn Gastronomy Extravaganza”. Twelve talented contestants demonstrated their skills by preparing dishes incorporating chili peppers. After being evaluated by award-winning chefs, the top three winners of the competition were announced: Aiyarin Wachiratharakul, Jack Kwok, and Jurawadee Somsaard. The winning dish will also be featured as a “recommended dish of the month” at some of Wynn’s restaurants in the city.

“The two events aim to present an international ‘culinary carnival’ to further build on Macau’s role as a UNESCO-designated ‘Creative City of Gastronomy,’ strengthen the cross-border integration of ‘tourism + gastronomy’, and advance the diversified and sustainable development of Macau’s tourism industry” – Frederic Luvisutto, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of Wynn Macau

Addressing the significance of the contests, Luvisutto commented, “Our goal is to promote the exchange of food and beverage cultures from all over the world and provide a platform for local culinary professionals to showcase their talents.”

In addition to the culinary delights, a cultural handicrafts market was featured at the “Wynn Gastronomy Extravaganza.” Local social service organisations, including the Fuhong Society of Macau, the Complexo de Serviços Ngai Chun of the Macau Special Olympics, and the Macau Association for Intellectual Development Services, participated in the market by selling handicrafts for charity and social inclusion.

Strengthening ties

Apart from the “Wynn Gastronomy Extravaganza”, the “3rd Macau-Qingdao Beer & Cultural Festival and the Macau-Qingdao Week” took place concurrently at Wynn Palace. The event was co-organised by Wynn, Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd, Qingdao Haiming City Development Co. Ltd, and Macau Leisure Tourism Service Innovation Association.

“The unique charm of Macau and the culture of Qingdao Beer once again coincide, presenting a sumptuous ‘cultural feast’ to the people of the two cities, as well as building a new platform to deepen cooperation between Qingdao and Macau” – Geng Tao, Vice Mayor of Qingdao Municipal People’s Government

Coinciding with the 120th anniversary of Tsingtao Beer, one of the largest breweries in China, the festival aimed to promote mutual exchanges and closer collaboration between Mainland China, particularly Qingdao, and Macau in the fields of culture, tourism, economy, and trade.

Geng Tao, Vice Mayor of Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, expressed during the opening ceremony of the event, “The unique charm of Macau and the culture of Qingdao Beer once again coincide, presenting a sumptuous ‘cultural feast’ to the people of the two cities, as well as building a new platform to deepen cooperation between Qingdao and Macau.”

A colossal LED video wall showcased his creative journey and the highlights of his debut Macao exhibition.

For the lovers of contemporary architecture, we suggest “Doodle Cube”. Situated at the heart of Morpheus lobby. The experience seamlessly blends Mr Doodle’s distinct style with the contemporary architectural essence of Morpheus paying tribute to Zaha Hadid’s groundbreaking design.

City of Dreams: A canvas for creativity

Drawing inspiration from the architectural marvel that is City of Dreams, Mr Doodle’s art installations redefine the boundaries of creativity. The artist explains, “When an object is transformed into a doodle, it always results in a unique experience and effect. It all depends on the setting and shape of the object itself, and for City of Dreams, this was certainly the case.”

As Mr Doodle speaks, you can sense the passion he holds for this project:” It’s a great symbol of the exhibition and it really draws you in,” he emphasizes.

Doodling into Macau’s heart

Mr Doodle’s distinctive style brings a sense of joy and whimsy to the vibrant streets of Macau. He shares, “I hope that my doodles will bring a sense of happiness and fun to Macau, it’s already a very vibrant city and I found the people and visitors to the city really engaged with how my doodles have invaded!”

His words resonate as visitors interact with the art. Laughter and animated conversations fill the air, creating a palpable atmosphere of joy. The exhibition has indeed become a catalyst for a collective sense of wonder and creativity.

“I think the larger-than-life nature of the doodled facade or any of the numerous other aspects of the exhibition are really good fits for the city,” he reflects, adding “I hope, as it’s the main theme of the show, that people can share in my joy of doodling when they see my artwork.”

From concept to creation: Crafting Doodle masterpieces

Mr Doodle reveals his passion for experimentation with various materials. He asserts, “It’s my dream for my doodles to creep into every corner of the universe so no material is too challenging and no surface too big!”

As he elaborates on the creative process, what is most striking is the artists’ meticulous attention to detail that goes into every piece. From the initial sketch to the final stroke, each doodle is a testament to his boundless imagination. “It’s really nice to have a good blend of original artworks and installations,” he notes, “the installations can surprise and excite people who might not have expected to have such doodley days…”

Walking through the exhibition, visitors can’t help but be entranced by the sheer grandeur of the art. The installations, pulsating with energy, offer an immersive experience that transports them into a world where doodles reign supreme.

One of these examples is Love Wall. Right at City of Dreams’ first level visitors find a vibrant canvas adorned with Mr Doodle’s iconic patterns, inviting couples to infuse their own creativity during the Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine’s Day). This interactive installation embodies the artist’s aspirations for romantic connections, transforming into a kaleidoscope of vivid love expressions.

The power of collaboration: Creating artful magic

Collaborations form an integral part of Mr Doodle’s creative journey. He enthuses, “Collaborations always pose exciting opportunities and challenges, working with new groups means new ideas and I always feel enthusiastic about discovering the unknown.”

This exhibition, a testament to the magic that unfolds when artistic minds converge, has seamlessly blended the worlds of Disney, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, and Mr Doodle. The result is a symphony of creativity that spans generations, appealing to both the young and the young at heart.

“And of course working with COD to create installations around the exhibition was great fun too!” Mr Doodle adds with a grin. It’s evident that this collaboration has not only enriched the exhibition but also left a mark on his creative journey.

The grand unveiling

Until November 30, 2023 Macau becomes a hub of artistic exploration. The exhibition’s official launch at the Main Portal of City of Dreams on August 1 was nothing short of spectacular. Distinguished guests, including Mr. Yin Rutao, Deputy Director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, and Ms. Leong Wai Man, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau SAR, joined the celebration.

The enchanting atmosphere of the opening ceremony set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable journey into the world of Disney Doodles. It’s a testament to the thriving art scene in Macau, fuelled by collaborations and a shared love for creativity.

In the heart of Macau, the City of Dreams is now also a destination for art and imagination. Renowned artisans from Angola, Portugal, Sao Tome e Principe, as well as East-Timor, have come together to offer a taste of their homeland’s exclusive creations. Visitors can expect to be captivated by a vibrant display of colors and a showcase of creativity from around the world.

In addition to the bazaar, visitors will also have the opportunity to acquire high-quality products originating from Portuguese-speaking countries, including fine wines, canned goods, ham, and culturally significant items from Macau. It’s a true sensory journey that allows you to travel to distant lands without ever leaving home.

The Sound of Culture

For lovers of the arts, a wealth of musical performances and exhibitions will be on offer. From the enchanting melodies of Grupo Choro Livre from Brazil to the traditional sounds of Sebastião Antunes & a Quadrilha from Portugal, and the stylish rhythms of Mr. Bow from Mozambique, along with Mucci from Cape Verde, a diverse musical landscape awaits.

Project highlights commitment to the district’s community and unique culture, providing support to SMEs and optimizing the street’s environment to attract more locals, visitors, and businesses, and boost the economy, Wynn Macau indicates

The pilot scheme to pedestrianise Rua da Felicidade has the potential to transform the district located at the heart of Macau’s city centre into a renowned “community landmark,” not only attracting more international visitors to Macau but also enhancing the business environment for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), said Linda Chen, President, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of gaming and integrated resorts operator Wynn Macau.

The “Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone Project,” supported by Wynn Macau in collaboration with the Macau Government, officially commenced on September 29, offering a wide range of attractions and amenities designed to entice visitors.

The pedestrian zone, opening exclusively to foot traffic from 11 am to 1 am every day, covers Rua da Felicidade and the adjacent alleys, including Travessa do Mastro, Travessa do Aterro Novo, Rua Do Matapau, and Travessa de Hó Lo Quai.

“Rua da Felicidade is a renowned old street surrounded by abundant tourism resources in Macau. Given its high historical and cultural value, the area has excellent conditions for revitalisation and utilisation,” Ms. Chen said.

“Wynn fully leverages its own resources and business expertise to enrich the cultural and tourism elements of Rua da Felicidade, including optimising the atmosphere of the street, introducing large-scale art installations, a cultural and creative market, art and cultural events, an interactive check-in game, and a night market experience,” she remarked.

“By incorporating diverse content, we aim to create a community landmark that is a must-visit for tourists and to establish a new business environment,” she added.

Daytime and night markets

One of the highlights of the Rua da Felicidade zone is a daytime cultural market. In collaboration with the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau, Wynn Macau has invited a diverse range of local cultural and creative brands to showcase their products and handicrafts in the market.

A roadside bar and food trucks are also set up in the district every night, creating a unique night market atmosphere that gradually envelops the neighbourhood, as illustrated by Ms. Chen.

“By incorporating diverse content, we aim to create a community landmark that is a must-visit for tourists and to establish a new business environment” – Linda Chen

An interconnected business district WeChat mini-programme has also been developed, with 60 check-in signs available throughout the pedestrian zone for visitors to access information about landmarks and merchants in the district. Through the WeChat mini-programme, visitors also have a chance to win prizes from shops and market stalls in Rua da Felicidade, as well as cash vouchers from 40 SMEs. Over 150,000 people and more than 60 SMEs are expected to benefit from this interactive offering, the operator has estimated.

“The pilot scheme is expected to benefit the businesses at the Rua da Felicidade and in the surrounding areas, attract more visitors and further boost the economy of the community,” Ms. Chen noted. “It also aims to maximise efforts to promote tourism in Macau’s old districts, thereby enhancing the overall attractiveness of Macau.”

The Rua da Felicidade Pedestrian Zone is the first community revitalisation project launched through a partnership between the Macau government and a gaming concessionaire. Standing for “Happiness Street” in Portuguese, it is located next to the city’s main thoroughfare, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro. The street also holds historical significance as it was once known for its vibrant nightlife attractions during the Chinese Qing Dynasty, including brothels and other entertainment venues.

East Meets West

In addition, the pedestrian zone features various photogenic installations placed throughout. At the main entrance of Rua da Felicidade, there is a floral installation inspired by the acclaimed floral designer Preston Bailey’s “hot air balloon” design, apart from a large gashapon machine, embellished lanterns, and moon rabbit installations across the zone, according to Wynn Macau.

To underscore the district’s Chinese and Western influences, nearly 20 Mainland Chinese and local performers have been invited to host daily performances in the zone during the pilot period. “In particular, the cultural and historical highlights that represent the blend of Chinese and Western cultures can attract international tourists and further assist Macau in expanding the international visitor market,” Ms. Chen indicated.

“The pilot scheme is expected to benefit the businesses at the Rua da Felicidade and in the surrounding areas, attract more visitors and further boost the economy of the community” – Linda Chen

With the start of the city’s six 10-year gaming concessions this year, the six local gaming operators have been tasked with the responsibility to enhance international visitation and develop non-gaming offerings. This includes initiatives such as promoting community tourism and revitalising old neighbourhoods within the city.

The government has previously identified six local sites for the gaming concessionaires to rejuvenate, including Rua da Felicidade, Piers 23 and 25 in Inner Harbour, Avenida Almeida Ribeiro and Rua de Cinco de Outubro, the Barra district, the Iec Long Firecracker Factory in Taipa, and the Lai Chi Vun Shipyard in Coloane.

Community focus

In addition to the Rua da Felicidade pedestrian project, Wynn Macau has actively engaged in community efforts to support local SMEs, as highlighted by Linda Chen. One notable example is their collaboration with the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau to organise a series of community markets throughout the city, including the Coloane Marques Market.

Over the past 6 years, the series of community markets has attracted over 2 million participants, facilitated brand promotion for over 300 SMEs, generated over 300,000 views on live-streaming sessions with internet influencers, and successfully launched two immersive historic and cultural tours to enhance the cultural aspects of community tourism in Macau, the Wynn executive stated.

“Wynn will continue to cooperate with the Macau SAR Government’s ‘1+4’ moderate diversified development strategy and cooperate with different stakeholders in the community,” Chen said. This would help contribute to the orderly development of non-gaming and community tourism in Macau and promote the comprehensive development of Macau’s economy and tourism, she added.

The “1+4” development strategy, introduced by the Macau government in recent years, aims to position Macau as an international tourism destination while fostering growth in four emerging sectors: health and wellness, modern finance, technology, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), culture, and sports.

“With the great support and participation of different entities, the Expo has kept going on annually even through the last three years overshadowed by the pandemic. With the travel restrictions lifted, Macao once again welcomes travelers from worldwide in 2023,” said Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes at the press conference introducing this year’s edition of MITE, which is organized by MGTO and coordinated by Macau Travel Agency Association.

This year’s MITE event is taking place on an exhibition floor that spans approximately 23,000 square meters and has around 870 booths. The expo will include online features such as “Cloud Invitation,” “Cloud B2B,” “Cloud Live Broadcast,” and “Cloud Contract Signing” to facilitate business networking and sales and foster new partnerships through online and offline exchange.

Under the theme “MITE connects the World,” the Expo ushers in a brand-new chapter. “We welcome members of the travel trade from near and far to Macao for regional and international tourism cooperation, in turn diversifying visitor markets and rebuilding momentum for tourism development,” Ms. Fernandes added.

This year’s MITE features six major highlights with innovative elements.

1. New “1 + 4” Pavilion supports rise of the four major industries

Companies from the four major emerging industries designated as key drivers of Macao’s economic diversification, namely health and wellness, modern financial services, high technology, conferences and exhibitions, commerce and trade, and culture and sports, will be featured in the new “1+4” Pavilion. In line with the Government’s diversification strategy, MITE will host the “Macao International Health Management and Wellness Tourism Forum” and the “Combining Capital, Intelligence and Commerce to Build a Cultural Tourism and Financial Ecosystem—Macao Cultural Tourism and Finance Salon.”

Following each cooking demonstration, the audience will have the opportunity to taste the delicious dishes prepared by the chefs, providing a glimpse into the fascinating gastronomic cultures of various cities.

Tourism destinations located within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will share up-to-date information on multi-destination travel and collaborate to promote the Greater Bay Area as a single destination.

The “Macao Educational Tour Development Forum” will be held at MITE to advance educational tourism development in Macao.

The event organizers have invited experts from Mainland China to provide a thorough explanation of the concept of educational tours. In addition, municipal governments will share their own experiences in developing their cities as destinations for educational travel.

6. Deepen integration of “tourism + culture and creativity” through IP authorization

The Expo and Cultural Affairs Bureau will present the Macao Creative Pavilion to promote locally produced original products with intellectual property rights, encouraging growth and cooperation with other regions. MITE will also host cultural museums from Mainland China, including Suzhou, Sanxingdui, Jinsha, and Nanjing.

Melco Resorts & Entertainment continues to support the SAR government’s policies to develop Macau into a world center of tourism and leisure. As a developer, owner and operator of integrated resort facilities in Asia and Europe, in April, Melco announced the highly anticipated opening of an unparalleled indoor water park and its own-branded hotel, Epic Tower, at Studio City Phase 2, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to the continued growth and diversification of Macau’s tourism industry.

Designed by renowned international architecture firm Zaha Hadid Architects, the USD1.2 billion Studio City Phase 2 features two luxury hotel towers – Epic Tower and W Macau, Macau’s all-new, all-weather, all-year-round water park, and state-of-the-art space for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions. The extension project will complement Melco’s existing offering of ‘next-generation’ world-class entertainment and further enhance the distinctive Studio City brand.

Studio City Phase 2’s stunning new attractions include its indoor water park spanning nearly 10,000 square meters. Featuring 16 heart-pumping waterslides and attractions, the park offers year-round aquatic adventure.

Furthermore, as an own-branded hotel of Melco, Epic Tower will offer a total of 338 glamorous suites in 8 room types including 2 villas, epitomizing the Company’s hallmark for exceptional hospitality with a design fusing innovation, fashion and city chic.

Mr. Lawrence Ho, Melco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented: “With our new ten-year gaming concession, Melco’s commitment and belief in Macau’s long-term future remains unwavering. Throughout the pandemic, we never compromised our core beliefs in providing guests with quality hospitality, great design and world leading entertainment.

“The opening of the indoor waterpark and Epic Tower marks the start of a new chapter for Studio City, which is also an important milestone in Macau’s diversification objective and a demonstration of Melco’s confidence and belief in the long-standing potential of Macau. The development, in addition to the many more to be unveiled in the third quarter of this year, undoubtedly reinforces Studio City’s positioning as Asia’s Entertainment Capital, and Melco’s commitment to Macau through substantial and ongoing investment in the city’s future.”

Honored with Macau’s top result for exceptional hospitality and culinary offerings

Last month, Melco was once more honored by MICHELIN Guide Hong Kong Macau 2023 with a collective total of seven stars for four of its signature restaurants located across City of Dreams, Studio City and Altira Macau. The achievement designates Melco as one of Macau’s integrated resort operators with the highest number of Michelin-stars. The Company’s Cantonese fine dining restaurant Jade Dragon has been awarded the top accolade of three Michelin-stars for the fifth consecutive year, while Alain Ducasse at Morpheus, offering gastronomy that pays homage to the great traditions and savoir-faire of French cuisine, has been honored with two Michelin-stars for the fifth consecutive year. Melco’s Cantonese restaurants Pearl Dragon at Studio City and Ying at Altira Macau have each been awarded one Michelin-star.

FTG honored Melco with a total of 17 Five-Star awards across the Company’s property portfolio that includes City of Dreams, Studio City, Altira Macau and City of Dreams Manila. Markedly, Altira Macau celebrates its 14th successive year as FTG Five-Star award recipient across both Hotel and Spa categories.

Asia’s first-ever Residency Concert Series continues with star-studded line-up

Known for his ‘Wǔ lín’ concert series, Aaron and his team have named the exclusive performance at Studio City ‘Aaron Kwok Amazing Dream Live on Stage in Macau 2023’. The concert, scheduled for July, will feature a mesmerizing stage design with a blend of virtual lighting and shadow special effects, and a three-dimensional concept, creating a dynamic and dreamlike stage. Rising to the challenge https://www.macaubusiness.com/rising-to-the-challenge1/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 01:00:17 +0000 https://www.macaubusiness.com/?p=570347 Aristocrat’s continual investments and perseverance, even as Macau underwent its most difficult period, are bearing fruit, with a bright future ahead.]]>

Aristocrat’s continual investments and perseverance, even as Macau underwent its most difficult period, are bearing fruit, with a bright future ahead.

Macau has undoubtedly been through a rough three years, with its main industry – tourism – battered by border restrictions, casino shutdowns, mandatory separation measures and the overbearing question of when the sun would begin to shine on the SAR again.

Amongst all the difficulties, the period also brought to the forefront the strength of companies who have been investing in their employees, in developing the local market, in diversifying their success strategies and in continuing to invest even when nothing was coming in.

*This is a sponsored feature

Lloyd Robson, General Manger of Asia for Aristocrat, prides himself on the company doing exactly that – fulfilling its promises to its clients, employees and to Macau, even during the tough times.

“For us it’s really all about our people, our product and our customers. And we really focused particularly on agile decision making through what was a difficult period. And a huge credit to our staff for the resilience they showed, as well, to get us through it,” notes Robson.

Getting through together

Employee well-being was a cornerstone of not only surviving but thriving, with the company implementing mental health support measures and continual development programs.

“We did everything we could to really support our team, which was very important to us. We also obviously had a lot of global support too, being a global company, and being a diversified company as well,” notes Robson.

But customers were also going through tough times, and the company knew the pressures they were facing.

The solution: Aristocrat Assist.

“We don’t exist without our customers, and we put a program in place […] importantly to allow them to have relevant and refreshed gaming floors, and more or less to catch up with the rest of Asia”.

This support continues to this day, even after a “significant resource and investment profile” undertaken primarily in the past two years “to get ourselves prepared and ready for the customers as they embarked on 2023”.

This is particularly important as local authorities ushered in the Macau Technical Standards 2.0 in 2021 – something all gaming machines on casino floors had to be in compliance with initially by 2024, but the deadline has now been revised to 2026.

“We put a lot into that and now we’re working actively with the customers on their roll-out program […] So, for the next four years I would expect to see the electronic gaming floors really transform,” notes Robson.

New times ahead

With the issuance of the new 10-year gaming licenses for Macau’s six concessionaires, and the opening of borders, Macau is now entering a new growth period, and it seeks to attract more international visitors to help it diversify.

“The concept of having an industry which is less reliant on one demographic is something that we support – not just from a gaming industry point of view but from a general economy perspective here in Macau,” notes Robson.

Being a global company, Aristocrat is helping this move by supplying games that don’t just “move money around the floor” but ones that work “in a responsible manner” and which “create incremental gross gaming revenue for customers”, as well as “creating a compelling reason for people to enjoy our games on casino floors”.

One of these is Dragon Link, which has already seen “phenomenal” success in other markets and is set to come to Macau this year.

Robson notes that games such as Dragon Link demonstrate Aristocrat’s strength in adapting to operators’ needs, whichever source they focus on.

“We create games globally. Our design studios are in multiple continents around the world, we’ve got great, rich, player insight in all the demographics around the world, so we feel like we’re in a very good place to be able to provide that insight to the operators as they go about determining which target markets that they’d like to attract from an international sense,” notes Robson.

Macau is home

While Aristocrat continues to expand throughout Asia, having opened up a new office and showroom in the Philippines this year, Macau will remain its Asian base – with the Macau Integration Centre (whose employees are 100 per cent local) manufacturing its machines “for the entire Asian continent”, something that “provides GDP growth and employment for locals”.

An SME itself, the company prides itself on its “Made in Macau” certification and giving employees “the development and growth opportunities that come with a structure that is growing”.

“It’s a pretty prosperous period moving forward, and we can really put a lot of that development work into play, because the team has a lot of great initiatives to be able to work on,” notes Robson.

And with Macau at its base, the future is looking pretty good.

“I see a very, very bright future here for the Asian gaming industry. The rebound of Macau overlaid with the growth that’s going on in Singapore, the Philippines, and then the next evolution of Southeast Asia – when you bring all that together we see a huge, huge bright future as we move forward in 2023 and beyond,” says Robson.

Four local SMEs share their stories of how their businesses have been elevated to the next level thanks to Galaxy Entertainment Group’s robust support.

Upholding its philosophy of “what is taken is to be used for the good of the community,” Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has long been dedicated to giving back to the local community and continues to support local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Local procurement is one of the direct ways for GEG to provide steadfast support for the growth of its key partners. Today, over 90% of GEG’s total expenditure on goods and services comes from Macau enterprises and SMEs.

In addition to being the first concessionaire to launch an SME partnering program back in 2015, GEG has also prioritised SMEs in business cooperation and provided them with technical support and helped them strengthen and promote their brands.

**This is a sponsored feature.

Funny Eye Brewery is one of the local SMEs that benefit from GEG’s “Large Businesses Leading Small Businesses” business model.

“GEG approached us when we were still with the stall,” Crystal Kwok, Marketing Director and one of the three founders of the company recalls how the cooperation started. “They’ve been very supportive of us during our journey of strategising a business, sharing ideas and facilitating our collaboration with other GEG tenants,” Crystal continues. “For us start-ups, this kind of encouragement and guidance is in some ways more important than money.”

With GEG’s liaison, in 2021, the company launched their products in one of Macau’s most popular bars – the Roadhouse Macau on the Broadway Food Street. Later, GEG also brought the cooperation forward by including Funny Eye’s products in several of its famous F&B outlets and bars in its flagship property Galaxy Macau, as well as making the products available for guests of Galaxy Hotel via butler services.

“One of the most significant benefits of collaborating with GEG is that it adds trust to our brand,” Crystal continues, “Following our cooperation with GEG, many of our clients think that the brand GEG works with must be trustworthy. This also helps a lot.” GEG’s support to the SMEs also covers companies that provide auxiliary services, such as Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FF&E). Cyberbox-Chic, one of GEG’s long-standing SME partners, has already registered as an SME supplier with GEG in 2010, prior to the opening of Galaxy Macau.

Liu Chuen Yiu, Managing Director of Cyberbox-Chic Industries Limited, recalled that it was also GEG who initiated contact with his company.

“It was 2010 when GEG approached us and invited us as a local supplier to provide some supply items, such as catering furniture products, catering facilities, service equipment and public facilities. And we’ve been cooperating since then, supplying custom-made FF&E mainly for F&B, such as cases for trolleys and charging stations, amongst others,” Mr. Liu recalls.

“Working with GEG has been a great benefit to our company in terms of our growth as well,” Mr. Liu introduces, “Not only have we established a scientific and standardised follow-up system, but we have also learnt a lot about new and innovative management methods and systems, and the partnership has also raised our profile and awareness in the industry, helping us to reach other business opportunities. GEG was also very generous in recommending us to some potential customers. It’s a very robust support to our development.”

Cyberbox-Chic started from a small office with only 4 employees and a small factory with 10 workers in the Mainland China. During the 12-year cooperation with GEG, the company was able to move into a standard office and expand its company structure. Currently, they have 8 professional employees and a factory with 230 workers in the Mainland China.

“From a family business to where we are today, thanks to the opportunities that GEG has brought us along the way,” says Mr. Liu emotionally. “Being an SME, if we didn’t have such a good customer as GEG, even if we had some innovations, we might not have had such good results because if no one buys, there is no circulation and no turnover.”

Macau printing company Tipografia Fu Tat (Fu Tat) is another local SME that has grown and developed together with GEG since the very beginning. “We have been working together since the opening of the StarWorld Hotel,” explains Fu Tat General Manager Chan Wai Hong, “The StarWorld Hotel’s opening invitations were produced by us.”

With his company mainly producing in-room and front-office print collaterals for GEG, such as letterheads, notes, and room card sleeves, Chan explains that the high-quality requirements made by GEG propel his company to achieve greater improvement and strive for excellence.

Cooperation with GEG has strengthened Fu Tat’s competitiveness and business growth, and their business has continued to grow. “GEG’s continued orders have helped us a lot. There were more requests for related information materials. We have also acquired new equipment to support our business operations over the years.” “Furthermore, GEG has been very punctual with every payment from the beginning to now, and only further ahead. That was really helpful for SMEs like us.”

Fu Tat is not the only GEG vendor that has experienced this. Amy Chan, General Manager of Macaufacture Medical Supplies, also made this point in her conversation with us.

“Our SME is not a very profitable business, and GEG knows that we have encountered some situations in our operation, including rent and labour, so they are really punctual in their payments.” Amy shared with us her experience. “This is very important for us to recover our capital and maintain our business.”

Macaufacture Medical Supplies Ltd. was founded in 2020 and was the first Macau company to produce masks locally. GEG identified Macaufacture Medical Supplies Ltd. in a business matching session held by the Macau Young Entrepreneur Incubation Centre in 2020 and has placed orders for facemasks with them since June 2021.

“Being a large corporation, GEG has a strong demand for quality. The completion of GEG’s quality orders has boosted our confidence. We have learned a lot from collaborating with such a large enterprise, and the partnership with GEG has led to orders from other companies as well. GEG’s support fully demonstrates its commitment of corporate social responsibility and further proves its constant support for our SMEs and ‘Made in Macau’ brands.”

Upholding its philosophy of “what is taken from the community is to be used for the good of the community,” Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has put forward a wide array of environmental protection and energy conservation initiatives throughout the years to facilitate the sustainable development of Macau. These efforts vary from green procurement and partnerships for environmental protection to participation in regional and global sustainability events like Earth Hour. In particular, considering local SMEs as its key partners and prioritizing them in business cooperation, GEG has also been exploring partnership opportunities with the SMEs in the green sector to support their growth and development.

One of the latest initiatives of GEG is a three-year partnership with local motorcycle supplier KL to establish a battery swap station for electric motorcycles in the team member motorcycle parking lot at Galaxy Macau.

**This is a sponsored feature.

As the first integrated resort operator in Macau to provide battery swapping service for e-motorcycles, GEG aims to encourage more team members to opt for green mobility solutions and supporting the long-term vision of the city and the country.

“GEG is the first large local corporation that works with us to set up a battery swap station,” says Lei Chong Sam, head of KL that caters products of e-motorcycle brand Ecooter. “GEG has actively approached us for this partnership with the aim of working hand-in-hand to make a contribution for the environmental sustainability of Macau.”

As part of the partnership, GEG provides a rental-free space in the team members’ motorcycle parking lot at Galaxy Macau for KL to install the battery swap station, becoming one of the 10 battery swap stations run by KL across the city.

“From discussion to the installation of the battery swap station at Galaxy Macau, it has only taken a short period of time because we both are very committed to and attach great importance to this green initiative,” he adds.

Favourable outcomes

Besides the financial incentive, Lei underscores the convenience of charging e-motorcycles as one of the major considerations for locals to swap from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric ones. “This battery swap station can inspire more GEG team members to mull the possibility of purchasing e-motorcycles, because it is so convenient for them to charge their bikes,” he states. “We believe that GEG and its team members can serve as a pioneer to help Macau lower its carbon emissions and transform the city into a more environmentally-friendly city.”

The battery swap station has been set up at Galaxy Macau since the end of last year — and Lei has so far been satisfied with the outcome. “We are happy to see that there have been more GEG team members to inquire about our e-motorcycles and service since the launch of the battery swap station,” he says. “The joint effort has been successful in increasing environmental awareness among GEG team members.”

“Through this partnership, we understand that GEG is not only a local business that focuses on the entertainment sector, but it also proactively supports Macau’s sustainable development as a green community through concrete actions such as cooperating with the government’s measures,” Lei adds.

Wide range of sustainability measures

In addition to partnering with KL, GEG has also taken various measures to fulfill its corporate social responsibility and accelerate the transformation of Macau into a green and smart city.

In 2020, GEG became the first local integrated resort operator to partner with Macau Coca-Cola Beverage Co., Ltd to create a circular system for all GEG-branded bottles and its properties. Moreover, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions, GEG has also replaced its multiple diesel-fuel guest shuttle buses at Galaxy Macau and Broadway Macau with electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.

GEG also endeavours to protect biodiversity and the habitat by maintaining the largest greenery landscape among all of the integrated resort properties in Macau. Covering a total area of 55,000m2, the lush landscape at Galaxy Macau has more than 2,000 trees and over 1.5 million plants and seasonal flowers helping to remove more than 500 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.

US financial rating agency Fitch assessed Fidelidade Macau’s financial strength and ability to meet senior obligations to policyholders on time for the first time, and the outcome highlighted the company’s robustness.

By assigning Fidelidade Macau an Insurer Financial Strength (“IFS”) of “A-” (Strong), with a stable outlook, the ratings giant highlighted four key drivers: strong capitalization, robust underwriting profitability, moderate/favourable corporate governance, and low investment and liquidity risk.

“The insurer maintains strong capitalization, which is well in excess of the regulatory minimum requirement of 150%,” Fitch stated.

The international rating agency also noted that Fidelidade Macau has “maintained strong profitability, with a return on equity of 12% in 2021 and a three-year average of 13% from 2019-2021.”

The Fitch rating is a milestone for Fidelidade Macau, a well-established leading life and non-life insurance company in the SAR.

Fidelidade Macau’s strategy will continue to focus on diversifying its business development through the exploration of innovative and capital-efficient products, as well as increasing sales through its well-established banking partner Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) – a key competitive advantage – while exploring new channels.

The recently obtained A- rating from Fitch is set to unlock the company’s ability to attract new clients and tap into new niche markets. Fidelidade Macau is also confident on exploring new opportunities resulting from the joint development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.

One hundred and six caterers will gather in Cotai Strip Park until December 26 for a food fair highlighting the gastronomies of Macau, Chengdu, Shunde, Yangzhou, and Huai’an. Themed “Fiesta for Five”, the event spawns over 11 consecutive days to combine the culinary specialities of the five “Creative Cities of Gastronomy” in China with culture, creativity, entertainment, tourism, and the charm of Macau. It is an event not to be missed, as apart from delicious foods to try and see being prepared live, there is also plenty of entertainment to enjoy.

A UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2017, Macau is a bustling capital of fusion cuisine. Macau’s historical connection to Portugal made it the birthplace of one of the world’s first fusion gastronomies – Macanese food. Macanese dishes like Michi, Porco bafassa, Capela, or tacho are some of the delicacies that resulted from the convergence of Portuguese and Chinese cultures. In Macao, the inspiration for culinary inventiveness remains very much alive in our city, and the industry has seen plenty of innovation and creativity over the last few years. Whether it’s world-renowned Michelin star restaurants or well-kept secret spots in town, Macau has a gastronomic fit for every taste.

Organised by the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau ZAPE ,co-organized by Macao Government Tourism Office and the six major integrated tourism and leisure enterprises in Macao, “Crunch and Munch Fair in Macao – Fiesta for Five” is the first major culinary event held outdoors in the Cotai area. Over eleven days, visitors will be able to try the specialities of China’s five Creative Cities of Gastronomy, which includes Macau. In addition to local food and beverage vendors, various culinary offers from Chengdu, Shunde, Yangzhou, and Huai’an will also be available to be tasted. This initiative aims to showcase Macao as an exchange platform to promote the heritage and innovation of the Creative Cities of Gastronomy and to spread China’s gastronomic culture.

This event is divided into five thematic zones according to each Creative City of Gastronomy. The programme includes a series of shows, talks and presentations, art demonstrations, some Sino-Lusophone music and culture shows, fun interactive games and other great attractions to be discovered. During the event, famous chefs from the five Creative Cities of Gastronomy will be cooking on-site for everyone’s delight. Representing Macao are some chefs from the six integrated tourism and leisure companies in Macao, which will be showcasing live their most representative local dishes.

Some of the programme’s events occur at specific times every day, so here is the schedule breakdown of what not to miss. There will be a Sino-Portuguese Cultural Music Festival, which takes place daily at 5:00 pm, 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Each session lasts about 30 minutes. The Tourism Presentation Seminar and Performance lasts also around 30 minutes and takes place daily from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Soon after, from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm, there is an unmissable Chef’s Demonstration where we can watch the chefs perform their art. On the public holiday of December 20, the Macau Special Administrative Region Establishment Day, there is an additional Chef’s Demonstration session from 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Also, daily there will be some fun Stage Interactive Games, firstly at 6:30 pm and then again at 7:30 pm. These sessions have a duration of 15 minutes each. Finally, the Food Booths are, of course, the main attractions of the “Crunch and Munch Fair in Macao – Fiesta for Five”.

The “Crunch and Munch Fair in Macao – Fiesta for Five” is also being promoted in China through some key Mainland China media outlets. This event is a great way to showcase Macao’s attraction as a Creative City of Gastronomy to Chinese tourists, as it promotes the characteristics of our diverse gastronomy. Visitors from Mainland China will get to experience first-hand a plethora of Macao’s characteristic delicacies without leaving the Cotai Strip.

Admission is Free, the Food Booths open for business daily from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm in the Cotai Strip Park, so come hungry!

University of Macau: A global partner in education, research and development https://www.macaubusiness.com/university-of-macau-a-global-partner-in-education-research-and-development/ Mon, 19 Dec 2022 01:01:18 +0000 https://www.macaubusiness.com/?p=520201 The University of Macau (UM) will resume all international student exchanges in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year.]]>

The University of Macau (UM) will resume all international student exchanges in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year. Portuguese-speaking countries are one of the main focuses of a global strategy that positions the university as a world-class education institution and cutting-edge research hub, scaling new heights in the international academic circles.

Since its inception more than 40 years ago, UM has been shaping itself into a powerhouse of academia, not only in the region – particularly within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area – but also globally, by developing a reputation forged in patents, publications, and increasingly, contracts that are turning its research and findings into tangible industry.

Recovery and growth

The pandemic posed unprecedented challenges on a global scale and across – the – board. For higher education institutions, it forced a new reality where online classes became the norm and made it difficult for international students to return to school. However, this academic year has shown the light at the end of the tunnel. Last year, exchanges with Chinese universities (both incoming and outgoing) were resumed and by February of 2023 all international student exchanges will resume.

This is just one tier of an internationalization strategy that UM has set out, one which Prof. Rui Martins, Vice Rector of Global Affairs, says has been a key guide to its growth since he stepped into the role in 2018. “We have defined our policy to enhance the attractiveness for international students, including offering scholarships and exemptions on tuition fees. In 2019, the international student number grew by 30 per cent. Although this plan was delayed by the pandemic, it’s now swinging into full force. The university will redouble its efforts to expand its international reach through student enrolments, research collaborations and exchanges.” says Prof. Martins. Currently, UM has developed partnerships with more than 320 higher education institutions spanning over 30 countries and regions, and has signed agreements on student exchange with over 150 higher education institutions in 24 of those countries and regions.

Prof. Rui Martins, Vice Rector of Global Affairs of UM

While contributing to Macau as a public comprehensive university, UM has been focused on attracting students from the mainland, particularly the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The university is also stepping up efforts to recruit students from other parts of Asia– “Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, […] Thailand and Indonesia”, as well as further abroad, with the Vice Rector noting “we have no restrictions”.

Ranking and collaborations

The key to maintaining its attractiveness is embodied by its ranking. “In the last two years,” notes the Vice Rector, “We have maintained our position between 201 to 250 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings”. This ranking places University of Macau “around the top 20 universities in China” (including Hong Kong), garnering top mainland students who could alternatively choose between renowned institutions such as Tsinghua University.

This is part of the university’s wider program, to focus locally, or regionally in the GBA, without losing focus on the wider arc. “This is our main focus: offering our programs and doing our research – locally, regionally and in the country. But, without losing the global component that is the university […] cooperating and collaborating all over the world – where of course we have some particular focus on the Portuguese-speaking, or Lusophone, countries – and also we emphasized recently the UK, where we also are starting some programs” notes Prof. Martins.

UM is expanding its global strategic partnership networks, and Portuguese-speaking countries are one of the main focuses.
Rector Yonghua Song and Vice Rector Rui Martins visit Angola to strengthen ties with Lusophone universities

UM’s role in linking universities in mainland China, Macau, and Lusophone countries has been a key component of the university’s identity and global development. A flagship organisation in this respect is the Association of Universities of Portuguese Language, which UM presided over as president for three years and currently holds the Vice-Presidency position. In addition, the Academic Library Alliance between Macao Special Administrative Region and Portuguese-speaking Countries, the Academic Library Alliance for Portuguese Language Resources between Macao Special Administrative Region and Mainland China, and the China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Ocean Research Alliance, are some of the key initiatives that UM has been pushing to bridge Chinese and Lusophone universities, with in-person conferences scheduled for the alliances in the fourth quarter of 2023.

UM holds annual meeting of AULP virtually

State-of-the-art research and development

The Vice Rector notes that research at UM is primarily concentrated in three main fields: “Basically the three State Key Labs that we already have, approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology, focus on the quality research in Chinese Medicine – where we are among the leaders in the world in this area; microelectronics (State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI), which is the lab that I founded and that I still manage from an academic point of view; and the Internet of Things for Smart City, which aims to develop exemplary applications for smart city.”

UM has been working with the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory in Braga, Northern Portugal, since 2018

The Vice Rector also notes that UM’s microelectronics lab will be ranked the top in the world at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, USA, in its 70th edition, in 2023 – with “15 papers and chips accepted there”.

“If you talk about the University of Macau in any electronics fora, everybody knows of it, and this is important to say because our lab is a lab with 70 per cent of personnel coming from Macau. They were trained in Macau schools and hold PhDs from UM, competing at the top in the world,” notes the professor.

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), together with six local integrated tourism and leisure enterprises, brings us a rebranded edition of the annual Light Festival this year. “Light up Macao 2022” will illuminate eight districts across the Peninsula and in Taipa and Coloane in a kaleidoscope of light and art painting Macao’s most iconic locations from 9 December 2022 to 1 January 2023.

Under the theme of “Dazzling Winter”, this event integrates the “tourism+” concept, innovating Macao’s touristic offer by combining cultural tourism, public art and innovative technology. Themed projection mapping shows will be presented by the Livelihood Affairs Bureau of Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, a team from Shanghai – a UNESCO Creative City of Design, a team from Portugal, and the winner of the selected best local work. Mappings take place from 7-10 pm.

“Light Up Macao 2022” emanates the glamour of Macao as a safe and outstanding destination, boosting the tourism industry. This year, the six integrated resorts are joining MGTO as partners for the first time, extending the attractions to the integrated resorts’ venues, and keeping the event’s central backdrop within the communities.

The event will feature fourteen locations in the islands spread out through three districts: Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane. At the Carmo Fair in Taipa, a “Colorful Stained Window” takes us into a palace, and the interactive game “Dancing Voile” might be the best dancing partner you’ll never forget. Taipa Village will be as romantic as ever, with a “Winter Romance” glittering installation and the “Blessings of Cupid” interactive game – take your significant other and see what cupid has in store for you! On the façade of Cozinha Pinocchio at the Largo dos Bombeiros, a projection mapping show called “Está Aqui, Tale of interurban” is formed by three chapters: “colourful urban life”, “various urban delicacy” and “charming urban festival”, expressing the culture of the Guangdong-Macao in- depth-cooperation zone in Hengqin. Also, in Taipa, Altira’s Hotel Lobby, 38 Lounge and Aurora outdoor terrace will transform into a “Glittering Garden,” offering a romantic backdrop for dining guests.

Macau is a joyful place where you can experience Christmas’s fun and enchanting spirit. The COTAI resorts will also join in the magic. Different light shows will be displayed in the various venues, including City of Dreams and Studio City (“Sparkling Winter”), MGM Cotai (“Light Up MGM”), Galaxy (“Winter Wonderland”), Broadway (“Broadway Food Street Festive Lights”), Wynn Palace (“Light Up Macao at Wynn”), Grand Lisboa Palace (“A Magnificent Lisboa Light Spectacular”), and at The Londoner (“Londoner Light and Sound Spectacular”).

In the picturesque Coloane village, light installations will be glowing at Largo do Bazar (“PFP Ferris Wheel”), Chapel of St. Francis Xavier and Eduardo Marques Garden (“Tea Time”), and in the Coloane Pier (“Flower · Emoji”). The interactive game “Flower Season NFT” will display a virtual flower tour that shows different colours whenever you pass by Largo do Bazar. Not to be missed, the projection mapping unto the façade of the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier will tell a story leading the audience into the historical moments of Macao. Representing the starting point of integrating Chinese and Portuguese cultures in Macao, this show brings to light Macao’s unique personality and charm.

Visitors can shop for local cultural and creative products during the event, play online games and obtain gifts. Pandemic prevention measures will apply during the event, including crowd management measures at entrances and exits, compulsory green Macao Health Code, scanning the venue code, undergoing temperature checks, using a facemask and maintaining social distancing.

Teamwork makes the dream work https://www.macaubusiness.com/teamwork-makes-the-dream-work/ Wed, 14 Dec 2022 06:46:38 +0000 https://www.macaubusiness.com/?p=526031 Aristocrat Macau’s approach to employee fulfilment and happiness]]>

Aristocrat Macau’s approach to employee fulfilment and happiness

Within the fast-paced, highly competitive global marketplace that the world has become, there’s a tendency towards looking at a business’ success only based upon numbers. But the problem with this approach is that oftentimes people then become metrics in the equation of success or failure, with consequences including high employee turnover, undefined corporate culture and even employee burnout and job dissatisfaction.

**This is a sponsored feature

Recent research by Oxford University’s Saïd Business School found a conclusive link between employee happiness and productivity, with happy workers 13 percent more productive.

Further research directly links a higher variability in negative emotions to higher emotional exhaustion and lower job satisfaction.

In short, if employees feel fulfilled and valued, the company as a whole progresses.

Build to succeed

But how can a company go about directly applying this strategy? Take a look at Aristocrat Macau’s approach. Director of Operations Annie Chan summarizes the group’s outlook:

“We take wellbeing seriously at Aristocrat – it benefits everyone and it’s a key part of our inclusive culture,” she says.

As Cecilia U – Administration Manager for Sales and Business Operations – points out, this can be as simple as regular meals together, “a lot of banter at work”, and activities such as “incense-making, hiking, karaoke and many more”- all of which ease stress and help develop workplace friendships.

But job fulfillment and support is also key, as Production and Services Manager Ricky Yip – who oversees the physical manufacturing of the group’s gaming machines – under the “Made in Macau” certificate, notes.

“We know that our employees are our most important asset. Other than offering competitive benefits, we also provide training and study opportunities as well as a good career development platform,” notes Yip.

Regarding career development, Annie Chan says that employees “can set-up their individual development plan, and there is a mentoring program, free access to LinkedIn, and leadership courses in partnership with leading universities”.

These programs include the Aristocrat Leadership Academy (ALA), Aristocrat Leadership Development (ALD), executive online program and mentoring program – a program which Product Planning and Strategy Manager Ashley Fong says has benefitted her regularly.

“I like that there is a strong focus on people with a structure program for my development – I have a mentor in Australia and one in Asia who are both great leaders. They always make themselves available to have a chat if I need a second opinion or need help identifying ways to build my skills,” she points out.

This constant feedback and ability to reach out for other opinions breeds further interest in growth, with Fong noting that “whenever I get to a new comfort zone, I get restless. So I consistently look for new subjects to explore from my mentors and get feedback from my teammates so I can continue to improve and become better at what I do”.

Cecilia U also pointed out the benefits of joining the ‘Ready to Rise’ program, “that coaches male and female employees on how to break gender biases and strive in their careers”.

Flexibility, understanding and well-being

Despite their benefits, training programs are not all that drive employee satisfaction, and especially during the pandemic, a wide range of management strategies have been rolled out to evolve to the situation.

For Aristocrat Macau, this includes a “People First payment” to certain staff who “will benefit from having a little extra money, as we head towards the end of year holiday season”, as well as an “Employee Support Fund which offers financial assistance to employees who have experienced an unforeseen life-changing financial hardship,” explains Annie Chan.

“It is not just about the money, but It shows that we care for our team,” she notes, noting that these initiatives are coupled with annual pay reviews, the group’s Reward and Recognition program and the SuperShare program – all aimed at giving back to team members for their contributions.

And due to the ever-changing environment caused by pandemic restrictions, a flexible work from home option was introduced, alongside ‘Wellness Fridays’ – with employees getting the afternoon off to “spend with family or for a team activity”.

Mental fatigue and stress are also concerns for the company, with the “Aristocrat Wellbeing Resource Center” providing links to resources to “help the team navigate the ever-changing environment that we live in today in areas such as Mental & Physical, Community, Financial, Career and Social,” notes Annie Chan. This is coupled with “an employee assistance program to access free mental health counselling” in each employees’ native language.

And for parents or expecting parents, the group also partnered with “Parents at Work to help team members with their caring responsibilities”, notes the Director of Operations.

Overall benefits?

So what are the benefits of these plans? How do the employees feel about what they do towards building a strong environment?

For Ricky Yip, the result is “we all work together, as partners, as a team”, while Cecilia U notes “we strive for our best and as such we have built strong bonds”.

Ashley Fong also notes: “I feel trusted and supported in everything I do here in Aristocrat”.

And building up the local talent base, and maintaining it is key not only for the company’s growth, but for the growth of the city’s talent pool as a whole, notes Annie Chan.

“I think for Macau in general, the city and local companies should embrace similar initiatives that can help to ensure top talent remains in or moves to Macau. So, they can continue to contribute to the success and growth of the city,” she opines.
