Zhuhai immigration station plan reignites underwater passageway talks

An updated design for a Zhuhai immigration and customs inspection station has provided the latest sign of the possible construction of an underwater passageway between the neighbouring city and Macau.

According to the Zhuhai Bureau of Land and Resources, the facility will cover an area of 20,000 square metres – opposite the Light Rapid Transit station in Barra.

The plan made public for viewing, which is yet to be approved, also mentions the long-discussed project of an underwater pedestrian tunnel – a link that is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the Inner Harbour district and Wanzhai, a town in Zhuhai’s Xiangzhou district.

Ferry services, which take between five and ten minutes, are currently the main mode of transport for people crossing the border between the two sides.
